Veteran character actor Stephen Root has confirmed he voices Brian Heder in Grand Theft Auto VI, becoming the first actor to publicly acknowledge a role in Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated title.
Root revealed the news during an interview with AP News at the BAFTA TV Tea Party, where he was promoting his Emmy-nominated performance in the Apple TV+ series Widow’s Bay.
When asked directly about his involvement in the game, Root said, ‘You’re gonna see me in there.’
The confirmation ends more than a year of fan speculation that began after the game’s second trailer, when players recognized Root’s distinctive voice in the character of Brian Heder.
Root acknowledged that his voice work on the animated series King of the Hill, where he voiced Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland, made it difficult for fans to miss his presence in the trailers.
‘I think from the first rollout of GTA that they were doing, maybe almost a year ago, they had my character in there. And there were too many people that knew me from King of the Hill and my voice,’ Root told AP News. ‘I think that secret kind of got divulged then.’
Brian Heder is described by Rockstar Games as a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Leonida Keys. He operates from a boat yard and serves as a mentor and landlord to Jason Duval, one of the game’s two protagonists.
In the second trailer, Brian instructs Jason with the line, ‘Just go get me my checks.’ The character is depicted as a laid-back yet shrewd operator who has survived decades in the drug trade by letting associates handle dangerous work.
Root expressed enthusiasm for the project. ‘I’m so happy to be involved with it,’ he said. ‘It’s an amazing thing to look at.’
Rockstar’s Traditional Secrecy
Rockstar Games typically keeps its voice cast sealed until a game’s launch. The studio does not release official cast lists, and actors rarely confirm their involvement before release.
Root’s disclosure is therefore unusual for a Rockstar title. Fans had previously reverse-engineered potential cast members by matching voices from trailers and promotional materials.
Other rumored cast members include Dylan Rourke as Jason Duval and Manni L. Perez as Lucia Caminos, though Rockstar has not officially confirmed either role. Bobby Moynihan is also rumored to voice the character Cal Hampton.
Brian Heder first appeared in the second GTA 6 trailer released in May 2025. The character also featured in the Extended Look footage, where he has a conversation with Jason.
Release Date and Platforms
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The game returns players to a reimagined Vice City and the fictional state of Leonida.
Root is currently nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Wyck Crawford in Widow’s Bay.
As of September 14, 2026, Root remains the only actor to have officially confirmed a role in Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar Games has not commented on the casting confirmation or released any official cast information.
